Loss of Crimean War

The loss of the crimean war was a massive blow

Freeing of Serfs

1861 Emancipation Manifesto proclaimed the emancipation of the serfs on private estates and of the domestic (household) serfs. By this edict more than 23 million people received their liberty. Serfs gained the full rights of free citizens, including rights to marry without having to gain consent, to own property and to own a business. The Manifesto prescribed that peasants would be able to buy the land from the landlords. They comprised an estimated 38% of the population.

Revolution

I'm reading about reconstruction and Ulysses S Grant. Every time I read about historical figures I have to wikipedia them. I like looking to see if they had descendants and what they did. So I pull up Ulysses S Grant's son and he actually married Bertha Palmer's sister. (The same mega rich Bertha Palmer who founded Palmer Ranch in Sarasota). Ulysses S Grant's granddaughter, Julia travelled to Rome with her aunt. While there she met Prince Mikhail Mikhailovich Cantacuzène. He was a Russian nobleman and thr couple ended up marrying in Newport, Rhode Island and living in St Petersburg, Russia. Prince Mikhail would serve in WW1 but escape Russia after the revolution in 1917. Prince Mikhail and Julia then moved to Sarasota to be close to Julia's aunt. The couple divorced and Prince Mikhail married a woman from Sarasota. He managed farmland and owned a local bank in Sarasota. He died in 1955 and was buried in Bradenton at the Manasota cemetery. Now, I've passed that cemetery a whole bunch of times and I've considered it a pretty depressing place to be buried. It's right next to a main road with a Burger King opposite. However, now I know there's a Russian Prince buried there.
