British History - Boudica

6-8 years old

Story

Boudica and her husband lived in ancient England in 60AD. They were part of Celts, tribal people with deep roots in Ireland and Scotland today.

The Romans invaded Britain or as they called it, Britannia. This is where the name comes from. When the Romans invaded they killed Boudica's husband who was head of the tribe. The Romans did horrible things to her and her people. The people were angry and Boudica inspired them to fight back.

"This is a woman's decision; as for men, they may live and be slaves."

The men saw a woman ready to fight back and be brave so they didn't want to be cowards. Like other ancient Celtic women, Boudica had trained as a warrior, including fighting techniques and the use of weapons.

She lead an army of Britons against the Romans. She rode on a chariot with her daughters. So they marched to Colchester. The Romans underestimated their numbers and got defeated. Boudica's army then marched to Londinium, the name for London during Roman times. Again, Boudica defeated the Romans. They were a thorn in the advanced Roman's side.

Boudica's revenge was fierce and her troops killed tens of thousands of Romans. However, the Roman troops were too well trained and eventually won.

Though her rebellion failed, and the Romans would continue to control Britain until A.D. 410, Boudica is celebrated today as a national heroine and an embodiment of the struggle for justice and independence.
